Vice President Dick Cheney: Convenient StorytellerAugust 31, 2011Former Vice President Dick Cheney tells great stories. Too bad most of them aren’t true. Cheney is currently on a book tour promoting his new book In My Time. And as in past years, when Cheney’s mouth is moving controversial, questionable, and inaccurate things come out. This book tour is yet another attempt by Cheney to revise history and pretend that the Bush administration didn’t make deadly mistakes. |
Judge Blocks Texas Forced Sonogram Bill, Texas Women See Glimmer of HopeAugust 31, 2011NOTE: This is an update to fabulous Feminists For Choice blogger Maureen’s post. You can read it here. I’m sure you read the horrific news coming out of Texas over the last few months. Our governor (and GOP presidential candidate) Rick Perry signed a bill requiring women seeking abortions to view a sonogram of their |

THE NEXT GENERATION: Young Feminists and the BudgetAugust 26, 2011This summer I had the opportunity to participate in a webinar narrated by Terry O’Neill, the president of NOW, entitled “The Budget Deal is a Feminist Issue.” The webinar discussed how Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) 2012 budget deal would cut several social services on which women depend disproportionately. Programs on the chopping block included Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Planned Parenthood and other family planning clinics, Pell grants, job training, Head Start, childcare programs, and WIC nutrition programs. Women depend predominantly on most, if not all, of these programs. |
Wasserman Schultz: “Stop playing politics with women’s lives.”August 24, 2011“I have never felt my right as a woman was more threatened than I do today,” said Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz at a Planned Parenthood rally yesterday who emphasized that she was 6 years old when Roe v. Wade was passed and we will not go back to that time. She also asked that Florida Gov. Rick Scott stop playing politics with women’s lives as he recently signed FOUR bills that would curb women’s access to abortion. |
5 Live discussion about politics, partners and CBBAugust 23, 2011Do the partners of people in politics have a responsibility not to draw too much attention to themselves? This was one of the questions in a debate I recently took part in on Radio 5 Live in response to Sally Bercow's appearance on Celebrity Big Brother. You can listen to the programme here until friday (26 August) and the relevant discussion can be found at 0.34.28 and 0.51.38. |
Rick Perry: Abstinence-only education works…wait nopeAugust 23, 2011Texas Governor Rick Perry has catapulted himself into the top of the Republican presidential field for 2012, which is extremely alarming if you’ve ever listened to Rick Perry speak words. Perry’s ultra conservative views about abstinence-only education are par for the course in the Republican party and Texas in particular, but to hear him explain the reasoning behind them sounds so ridiculous we’re not sure if he knows what abstinence-only education actually means. |
Because why only be Little Shits when you can be Complete Shits?August 21, 2011Yes, the Republicans. Did you guess from the headlines? Sometimes I wonder if they actually hate working USians. Do they have some list of To Dos in their Republican Lair that says: |

Breakfast at Maloney’sAugust 16, 2011A couple of weeks ago, some of the Feministing crew had the opportunity to meet with Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) for breakfast to chat about her past and current work, including her recent re-introduction of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). And she was awesome. |
Reading between Governor Rick Perry’s linesAugust 16, 2011Texas Governor Rick Perry should never ever be President. His far far right political views put him well outside of the mainstream. When he’s not busy proclaiming everything is unconstitutional, he’s saying a lot of other things that are either offensive or deeply alarming or both. On the first day of his first week as an official Republican presidential hopeful Governor Perry simply outdid himself. |
