Mississippi Roundup

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Next Tuesday is voting day, and voters in Mississippi have a huge decision to make with Initiative 26. I thought that instead of making my own arguments about why “personhood” initiatives are whack, I’d just share some links to what other folks have said about what is at stake in Mississippi. How the Push to

HR 358: Republicans further restrict women’s healthcare

From: discoverfeminism.com |

It’s amazing how far Republicans will go to further restrict women’s health care. House of Representatives passed the HR 258  which means that hospitals can refuse to perform life-saving abortion. Might I add that this decision is a family choice, not the House of Representatives or the hospital. Way to go, I thought we’re focusing on jobs? Instead they’re wasting time and hurting women even more. Sorry, pregnant lady who needs medical attention. The House of Representatives say I can ‘exercise my conscience’ on this one and since I’m aganist abortion I’ll just have you die now.

Watch the House of Representatives insult us live

From: discoverfeminism.com |

The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the so-called “Protect Life Act” at 11:30 – right now! Yes, this is another vote to stop abortion insurance coverage. I don’t know about you, but it’s pretty clear to me this is what people are really demanding at all the Occupy Wall Street protests popping up all over the country – more abortion restrictions. Good job Congress, way to keep doing the important work.

Life-threatening “Protect Life Act” back to a House vote on Friday

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Ah, the GOP and their priorities. Remember the heinous anti-choice bill last year that would allow doctors to deny lifesaving care if that person needed an abortion? Looks like it’s back for a House vote on Friday. The bill would also ban abortion coverage in state health insurance exchanges:

Arbitrary Abortion Laws, from South Dakota to Greece

From: discoverfeminism.com |

I have been planning a trip to Greece. So as you read this, I am taking a break from my job at an abortion clinic and gazing out on something like this photo. Don’t hate me. In addition to researching Greece’s legendary beaches...and history -- and the country’s protests in response to austerity measures -- I decided to research abortion laws there. In part, I wanted to know how open I could be about my work. But I was also curious. As recent and unparalleled legal attacks in this country have shown, abortion laws can be fascinating studies in systemic absurdity. When one belief system (the one that says abortion is murder) hits an irreconcilable belief system (the one that says women are more human than fetuses) the legal results are convoluted and bizarre.

When Wombs Speak Louder Than Words

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Next week, anti-choice activists bring the latest assault on reproductive rights to Washington, D.C. On October 13, the "Voices from the Womb" tour will set up shop at the Capitol Visitor's Center, offering both the public and members of Congress the chance to stop by and watch ultrasounds being performed on women in their first, second, or third trimester of pregnancy. The purpose of this The purpose of this fetal theater is allegedly to show the truth about abortion. What is that truth, you ask? Oh, just that an ultrasound image is so powerful, it erases all doubt that life begins at conception, establishes the personhood and humanity of a fetus, thereby giving the fetus protection under the 14th Amendment, and calls the very legality of Roe v. Wade into question.

GOP proposes eliminating Title X family planning funding

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Because they seem to have only one song in their repertoire, GOP legislators are at it yet again. I just issued a warning about this kind of thing, and lo! The anti-choice Republican lawmakers were already rearing to go with an anti-women, anti-family agenda! This persistent bunch is trying, yet again, to eliminate Title X funding. Title X funding provides birth control and preventive health care to more than 5 million low-income Americans every year.

New study questions link between HIV transmission and injectable contraceptives

From: discoverfeminism.com |

On Monday, the NY Times reported on a new study which appears to show that the most popular contraceptive for women in eastern and southern Africa may double the risk of HIV infection. In addition, when it is used by HIV-positive women, their male partners are twice as likely to become infected than if the women had used no contraception at all.
