Racist Psychology Today article claims black women are objectively less attractive than other women

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Wow. So Psychology Today published an article yesterday titled “Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?” Wow. It disappeared from the website after massive, overwhelming outcry about it being obvious racist pseudo-science bullshit. The fact the article ever went up at all is appalling, though, and unfortunately must be called out. (The article’s been reposted here if you feel the need to read it, which I do not recommend.)

Southwest tells another person they are ‘too fat to fly.’

I recently traveled to Panama for a much needed vacation and on my way back, my friend and I were sitting next to each other in seats neither one of us could comfortably fit in. I was hanging off my seat into the aisle (which of course led to the stewardess constantly going ‘EXCUSE me’) and my friend actually had sore arms from having to hold them up so as not to infringe on her neighbors space. We were too big for our seats and it made the ride mildly humiliating, uncomfortable and frankly, annoying.prising.

Bad Science Alert! Satoshi Kanazawa and Evolutionary Psychology

Psychology Today published a blog article yesterday "Why Are Black Women Rated Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women, But Black Men Are Rated Better Looking Than Other Men?" by Satoshi Kanazawa.

“Your body is not so powerful it can drive others to distraction”: a letter to a teenage girl about clothing, modesty, and Slutwalk

From: discoverfeminism.com |

As the controversy over SlutWalk hits the mainstream media, provoking a larger conversation about sexuality, safety, privilege and rape, I wanted to revisit this “letter to a teen girl”. Rachel Hills, who blogs at Musings of an Inappropriate Woman, recently posed this question from her 16 year-old self: how do I stop creepy old men from hitting on me? Rachel writes that she didn’t get a satisfactory answer when she was young, and she still doesn’t get good answers today.

As Judge Nancy Gertner Retires, We Lose One of Our Greatest Judges But Gain One of Her Greatest Opinions

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Judge Nancy Gertner kicks ass. I remember writing a motion in limine regarding the admissibility of virtual reality evidence for the annual mock technology trial when I was a student at William and Mary. Judge Gertner served as the judge for this mock trial, and she really took the time to pour over my motion, delivering a thoughtful ruling on it. The experience was one of the main things that inspired me to become an Evidence professor. If you are looking to inspire someone to enter a career in the law, or just to inspire someone generally, I have no doubt that her new book, In Defense of Women: Memoirs of an Unrepentant Advocate, will do the trick. Just watch this clip of Judge Gertner talking about her life, and I’m sure you’ll be sold.

Using Cosmetic Surgery Stop Bullying?

From: discoverfeminism.com |

A few weeks ago, ABCNews.com reported an article “When Is Cosmetic Surgery the Answer to Bullyling?” (Um, never?) We particularly liked this smart response by blogger Shark-Fu of Angry Black Bitch, who allowed us to reprint this with her permission. When I was a wee bitch I was bullied mercilessly for all things related to

“I used to have an eating disorder”: food, shame, perfectionism and the rapid recovery narrative

From: discoverfeminism.com |

“I used to be bulimic. But I’m better now.” I read that phrase in an email from a student last week, and thought about how many times I’ve read or heard something similar. And I was reminded that in our therapeutic culture, it’s perfectly acceptable to have a past history of addiction or illness — as long as one claims to be working on it, or to have recovered.

Beauty Is For Young People

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Women have been judging other women on their age and fashion decisions since the dawn of the miniskirt. Now there is a new study to lay down the law in terms of when women should stop with their supposed inappropriate dress and style. A sample of 2,000 women ranging in ages from 18 to 65

Proof That Little Girls’ Clothes Are Too Sexy

From: discoverfeminism.com |

When dressing a toddler, pre-schooler or other little one, what’s most important? Function? Warmth? Quality? Or Sexiness? A study has revealed almost one third of clothing designed for, and targeted at, young girls can be classified as “sexy.” While feminists have been theorizing and protesting against the objectification of children for many years,

The Insidious Effects of Fat Phobia

From: discoverfeminism.com |

This week in disturbing news: apparently one in four women would rather be severely depressed than obese. A Salon article this week gives a rundown on a new study from Arizona State University, which also found that 14.5 percent of women surveyed would prefer being totally blind to being obese. As the Salon piece goes on to say, “though women are far less likely to be overweight than men, they comprise 90 percent of customers in the commercial weight-loss industry.”

Look at that slut.

Can you believe that a junior Congresswoman, someone hoping to be taken seriously, would pose nearly topless on the cover of a fitness magazine — in business attire, with her blouse open exposing her entire stomach and most of her breasts (no nipples, but close)? No, you can’t believe it, because I made it up. And also it wouldn’t happen. If you’re a 29-year-old hottie-with-a-body congressman (emphasis on the “man”), though? Sure:

Saturday Vids: Life Size Barbie

From: discoverfeminism.com |

I remember hearing the truth about Barbie when I was in Middle School. I have no idea what the context was, but I remember feeling shocked at the fact that if Barbie were real, she’d have a 39-inch bust, an 18-inch waist and 33-inch hips. Of course, it’s hard to convert those measurements directly to a mental image, but it’s safe to assume that it’s pretty unattainable.
