Love the Body You’ve Got (Take it From a Fat Girl)

From: discoverfeminism.com |

I recall a time in elementary school when a friend tried to defend me from a few bullies by saying that I "wasn't fat, just big-boned." A few years later, I had a teacher who (probably in an attempt to keep my ego intact) wouldn't let kids say "fat" in class, only "fluffy."

“Do you think I’d be sitting here if they were called Empowerment Walks?”

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Love it. Morning Joe on MSNBC had our own Jessica Valenti on the show this AM to talk after her WaPo article this weekend that Maya mentioned in the WFR about SlutWalks and the future of feminism.

Love Yourself, Love Your Life

From: discoverfeminism.com |

I'm sorry, but I had to steal this video from a blog called I Am Beautiful, I Am Woman (which is written by a 15-year-old feminist, awesome much?). We should all take a lesson from this girl .

Jill Abramson to be first female executive editor at the New York Times.

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Jill Abramson, the Washington bureau chief for the New York Times, will be replacing Bill Keller as the executive editor, making her the first woman ever in this position. The New York Times writes,

This makes me so happy.

I love this picture almost as I love these three beautiful, smart, amazing women. They followed my May 31 post's instructions to the letter and purchased the Reverb issue of Bitch at True Colors Bookstore in sunny south Minneapolis. They supported feminist media, feminist retailers, and feminist writers all at once! I bet they even went home a entered a vote for their favorite feminist mommyblogger (me, of course). Thanks to these three sweeties, I am content--a not insignificant achievement in the frenzied final days of the school year. Thanks, friends!

SF Giants are the first major sports team to make an “It Gets Better” video

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Yesterday, the San Francisco Giants became the first major sports team to release an “It Gets Better” video. The team decided to make the video after a fan, Sean Chapin, used social media to collect over 6,500 signatures on a change.org petition. And now others, including a 12-year-old Red Sox fan, have started similar petitions to their favorite teams.

Awesome of the Week: Miley Cyrus Calls Urban Outfitters Out

From: discoverfeminism.com |

If you haven’t heard by now, Miley Cyrus is officially super awesome. On Friday, the young singer/actress/entrepreneur not only tweeted (above) anti-Urban Outfitters sentiments in response to their penchant for stealing artists’ work, but for also contributing a large sum to Rick Santorum and his Political Action Committee over the years ($13,150 to be exact). If you’re not sure who Santorum is, he is the radically homophobic, anti-women, anti-immigrant, anti-anything resembling tolerance former Republican senator of Pennsylvania who also inspired the “santorum” sexual neologism, coined by syndicated columnist and activist Dan Savage. In the Twitter words of Miley about Urban Outfitters:

Elizabeth Warren does not take any shit from anyone

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Yesterday during a subcommittee hearing, a Congressman accused Elizabeth Warren, special adviser to the President and front-runner to head the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, of lying. Elizabeth Warren (on whom I have a documented lady brain crush) was having none of that. Check out the look on Warren’s face when Rep. Patrick McHenry accuses her of lying and breaking her agreement on how much time she would spend testifying before this particular subcommittee.

J. Crew’s Continued Campaign of Inclusiveness

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Lately J. Crew has featured content on their website and in their catalog that steps outside the “norm” of what is usually found in fashion catalogs, or advertising in general.  In April, an ad on jcrew.com featured creative director Jenna, painting her son’s toenails pink (it’s his favorite color.)  The May catalog featured a designer for the preppy clothing brand, with his boyfriend.  So I wasn’t surprised, but happy to find when I opened the summer catalog today to find images of unconventional “models” featured. J. Crew staffers were featured again, this time in “Jenna’s Picks”.  The employees featured are of varying races, body shapes and sizes, including one employee who is pregnant.

Roseanne Barr on the challenges of making a hit sitcom

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Roseanne was pretty radical for television. So, it was sad and disappointing to read Roseanne Barr opening the curtain and showing what it was really like to get the sitcom made.

Roseanne Pulls Back the Wizard’s Curtain on Network TV and it Ain’t Pretty

From: discoverfeminism.com |

I have always loved Roseanne. I love her because she makes people uncomfortable (even me at times.) I love that she says what she believes, damn the consequences. Now, she can say whatever she wants because she doesn't work on a network TV anymore, but she still has major guts for the piece she pens in the current issue of NY Magazine that blows open behind the scenes TV behavior that seems more the norm than any of us TV watchers could ever believe. Roseanne the TV show was unique. She writes in the piece that we will never see

Roseanne on sexism, class and fame

From: discoverfeminism.com |

Growing up I watched a lot of TV. It’s strange to remember now, when I don’t have cable, and only watch the occasional netflix show or movie, but as a kid TV was what kept me company. It was always on, in the background when I did homework, as soon as I got home from school. Roseanne, along with a few other shows, were how I spent the majority of that time. I loved her show and I wasn’t even sure why. Now I think I get it.
