The L-Word’s Leisha Hailey kicked off of Southwest flight for kissing girlfriendSeptember 27, 2011If you love Leisha Hailey from The L-Word like I do, prepare to fume. Southwest Airlines, the airline company that loves to discriminate based on size and what you’re wearing (not to mention harass some women in the process) kicked the actress and her girlfriend off of their flight yesterday for kissing, with the reason being that Southwest is a “family” airline. |
“Win a Wife” Contest: The Business of Foreign MatchmakingSeptember 14, 2011“Win a Trip to Russia To Pick the Bride of Your Choice”. This was the name of a recent article I came across on the well-known feminist pop-culture blog Jezebel. A title as alarming as this was hard to ignore, and the article that followed reflected a disturbing but real contest that is being produced and promoted by a rock-music radio station in Edmonton, Canada. As I first glanced through the piece I thought there had to be some kind of catch but the description of the contest, strikingly entitled “Win A Wife”, was as follows: |

What’s more innappropriate than a 10-year-old model on a tiger skin rug? Not much.August 24, 2011Traditional female beauty, in our society at least, is generally associated with youth. We’re taught that youth equals vitality, sexuality and desire — and basically, the younger, the better. If you want proof of our youth-obsessed society, just look at the booming business the plastic surgeons are doing performing face lifts, breast lifts and Botox procedures. Or, take a look at fashion’s newest model, Thylane Loubry Blondeau, who happens to be 10 years old. |
PETA to start a porn site, because of course.August 22, 2011I don’t see what could possibly go wrong with this plan: Instead of focusing on anti-fur, the porn site will raise awareness of veganism, said Rajt. “We really want to grab people’s attention, get them talking and to question the status quo and ultimately take action, because the best way we can help the greatest number of animals is simply by not eating them.” |

You have to get to them young, before they start developing self-esteem on their own.August 22, 2011Weight Watchers. Atkins. Zone. How are you supposed to track points or calculate net carbs when you’re still mastering your addzuptas? Ask that irredeemable lardass Maggie! Available October 16, Maggie Goes on a Diet is (judging the book by its cover) the story of an overweight girl who gazes into a mirror, dreaming of being thin so she can fit into this dress she wants to wear. And something about soccer, apparently. But probably not while wearing that dress, which seems like it could be kind of restrictive. |
Hacked Photos Being Used On Adult WebsitesAugust 11, 2011A couple of weeks ago, an article on Mookychick highlighted an issue of hacked photos on adult websites. It’s a practice that’s going on for a little while, but it’s starting to trend, and it’s misogynist and tantamount to abuse. |

Men’s rights advocates promote terrorismJune 27, 2011The right-wing blogosphere is rallying around Thomas Ball, a man who committed suicide outside of a courthouse apparently in protest of being forced to pay $3,000 in child support. Amanda notes that abusers routinely use threats of suicide to control their victims, and that given Ball’s suggestion that men team up to hurl Molotov cocktails at police stations and prosecutors’ offices, he’s maybe not the best dude to step out and support. Nevertheless, conservative bloggers are comparing Amanda to the whore of Babylon (seriously, they actually say that, and it is kind of awesome) and praising Ball as a “warrior” who just got fed up. |
